Membership Requirements

AANS offers membership to neurosurgeons, residents, fellows and allied health professionals.

Categories

Fellow: For neurosurgeons certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgeons, Royal College of Surgeons of Canada, or Mexican Council of Neurological Surgery and residing in the United States, Canada or Republic of Mexico.

Provisional: For the neurological surgeon who has completed a training program approved by the ACGME, the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada, or the Mexican Council of Neurological Surgery within the last five (5) years, and has not yet met the certification requirements.

International and International/Developing Countries: For neurological surgeons who do not qualify as a Fellow Member by virtue of their country of residence or training and who have completed a formal neurosurgical training program as determined by, and suitable to, the Board of Directors. Individuals applying for International Membership must reside outside of the US or Canada at the time of application.

In an outreach effort to neurological surgeons in developing countries, the AANS is offering International Membership at a reduced dues rate. To be eligible for this reduced dues rate, neurosurgeons must reside in a developing country as defined by the World Bank's Income Data & Statistics. Other eligibility requirements apply: This International Membership is for neurological surgeons who do not qualify as a Fellow Member by virtue of their country of residence or training and who have completed a formal neurosurgical training program as determined by, and suitable to, the Board of Directors. See below for a list of countries eligible for the reduced dues rate.

Honorary: Members shall be chosen from recognized leaders in the field of neurological sciences. Honorary Membership is bestowed upon the recipient by the AANS as described in The Rules and Regulations of the Board of Directors of the American Association of neurological Surgeons (AANS).

Candidate: For residents and fellows who are enrolled in a neurosurgical training program approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (Neurosurgery) of Canada, or the Mexican Council of Neurological Surgery, A.C. Residents and fellows receive automatic membership when approved by the AANS Board of Directors. Benefits of Candidate membership include no dues; nominal registration to the AANS Annual Meeting; and free subscription to Journal of Neurosurgery, Journal of Neurosurgery: Spine, and Journal of Neurosurgery: Pediatrics through a grant from Medtronic.

International Candidate: International Candidate Members shall be residents or fellows who are enrolled in a verifiable non-North American neurosurgical training program. Upon application, the individual must submit a verifiable program completion date. Without a verifiable completion date, eligibility for this membership category is limited to five years maximum. Once certification is obtained, the International Candidate Members may request transfer to International member status with the submission of a copy of their certification certificate. A $20 application fee is required but this membership category does not pay dues. International Candidate Members receive free online access to Journal of Neurosurgery.

Associate: For non-neurosurgeons who have shown distinction in related medical disciplines, neuroscience nurses or physician assistants.

Allied: Allied Members shall be individuals who are Certified Surgical Technologists and are certified by the Liaison Council on Certification for the Surgical Technologist with advanced certification in neurological surgery.
Or
Individuals who are not neurological surgeons but who benefit the practice of neurosurgery by their administrative contributions to the practice of neurosurgery.
