New Study Shows Where Alzheimer’s Disease Starts, How it Spreads
Columbia University Medical Center researchers, through the use of high-resolution functional MRI (fMRI) imaging in patients with Alzheimer’s disease and in mouse models of the disease, have clarified three fundamental issues about Alzheimer’s: where it starts, why it starts there and how it spreads. New Brain-imaging Technology May Reveal True Risk of Repetitive Head Injuries
Although a brain autopsy is currently the only way to officially diagnose chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) — a condition linked to depression, dementia and memory loss — a new method for identifying signs of CTE in living brains has been developed by researchers at UCLA. The method is based on a radioactive compound that can be injected intravenously and measured in the brain by a PET scanner, which could help quantify the risks of repetitive head injuries. AANS Names Robert E. Harbaugh, MD, FAANS, President for 2015-2016
The AANS named Robert E. Harbaugh, MD, FAANS, as its 2015-2016 president during the AANS 82nd Annual Scientific Meeting. Dr. Harbaugh says his goal for the AANS is to make it an indispensable organization for the members, also stating, "As the spokes-organization for neurosurgery it is the responsibility of the AANS to lead a campaign demonstrating the value of neurosurgical specialists in today’s health-care reform environment." AANS Reaccredited as CME Provider by Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education

Epilepsy Patient Restores Her Life After Cutting-Edge, Minimally-Invasive Procedure
Melanie Vandyke spent almost 15 years incapacitated by epileptic seizures that prevented her from driving, pursuing a career and living independently. But since undergoing an innovative, minimally-invasive procedure called MRI-guided laser ablation, Vandyke is looking forward to reclaiming her life.
